On 28 December 1973, 50 years ago, the first volume of the legendary "Gulag Archipelago" was published by Ymca Press in Paris. In it, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn definitively exposed the monstrous system of labour camps, executions, deportations and other forms of repression that under Stalin's rule largely constituted the entire Soviet system.
